Researcher in Low-Resource Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Are you passionate about breaking down linguistic and cultural barriers? Do you have a keen interest in advancing natural language processing (NLP) for low-resource languages? Join our vibrant team at KInIT, where innovation meets impact!

Who We Are

The Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies (KInIT) is an independent, non-profit research institute based in Bratislava, dedicated to advancing intelligent technology research. We are proud to be the first institute of our kind in Slovakia, bringing together top-tier researchers, industry leaders, and a strong international network to push the boundaries of AI and NLP. Notably, we rank among the top 3 organizations in Horizon Europe for the amount of funding secured per researcher, which underscores our commitment to impactful and high-quality research.

Job description

At KInIT, we view low-resource NLP as one of the most exciting areas in machine learning and AI today. It extends well beyond improving support for a handful of low-resource languages. We believe that its emphasis on developing smarter ways for models to acquire knowledge and skills (such as bootstrapping reasoning and self-improvement techniques) will ultimately prevail even for large languages – rendering hacks like recruiting armies of annotators and pushing performance through sheer force unnecessary.

We are seeking a talented and motivated researcher; your role will involve:

  • Research Projects: Engaging in both basic and applied research projects, with a focus on low-resource contexts.
  • Innovative Methods: Developing and evaluating new NLP methods, designing and conducting experiments, and formulating data collection and annotation strategies.
  • Practical Applications: Translating cutting-edge research into real-world applications, in close collaboration with our research engineers.
  • Collaborative Initiatives: Working on grant-supported and commercial initiatives with top-tier international research institutions and industry leaders.
  • Scholarly Contributions: Publishing your findings in high-impact journals and presenting at prestigious international conferences.

Benefits

  • International Collaboration: Work with a diverse team of European and Slovak experts in AI and NLP. Participate in staff mobility programs to visit and collaborate with renowned partners.
  • Professional Growth: Enhance your scientific profile by publishing in top journals and conferences, refining your methods, tools, and machine learning skills.
  • Knowledge Sharing Environment: Participate in our knowledge-sharing culture by interacting with others during team days, by taking part in regular research and engineering seminars, and by attending webinars provided by our research and industrial partners across the world.
  • Research Resources: Utilize our computational infrastructure and engineering expertise to perform groundbreaking experiments, all while maintaining our commitment to energy efficiency.
  • Real-World Impact: Work on practical industry challenges, applying your research to solve real-world problems.
  • Supportive Environment: Join a great, supportive team that values your individual goals and ambitions.

Requirements

  • A PhD. in computer science, machine learning, or a related field.
  • An established track record of publishing at top conferences and in high-impact journals.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data, identify patterns, and derive actionable research insights.
  • A proactive approach to continuous learning, and staying abreast of the latest advancements in NLP and in machine learning.
