Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies is a committed signatory of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).

CoARA is a European initiative dedicated to transforming research assessment practices in line with principles of quality, openness and responsible evaluation. By endorsing the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment, organizations commit to reforming research assessment systems so that they better recognize a broad range of research outputs, practices and activities, support diverse career paths, and promote transparency, integrity and collaboration in the research ecosystem.

CoARA at the Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies

The Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies (KInIT) joined CoARA on 15 September 2025. As a signatory, KInIT is committed to CoARA’s ten Core Commitments and the principles of the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment (ARRA), contributing to a fairer, more inclusive, and more effective system for evaluating research excellence. 

KInIT values diverse backgrounds and career paths, and its evaluation processes reflect the different roles and expertise across both research and operational teams. This diversity is considered in how contributions are assessed, ensuring that a wide range of skills, knowledge, and professional development are recognized and supported.

Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is a network of organizations dedicated to improving how research, researchers, and research institutions are evaluated. Traditional assessment approaches often depend too heavily on publication-based indicators, such as citation counts, and tend to overlook the diverse contributions researchers make. To address this, more than 700 research organizations, funding bodies, evaluation agencies, and professional associations have aligned around shared principles and a common direction for reform. These are set out in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment, published in July 2022, which outlines a framework for implementing these changes.

CoARA envisions a system of research assessment that recognizes the full spectrum of outputs, practices, and activities contributing to research quality and impact. This approach prioritizes qualitative evaluation, with peer review as a cornerstone, supported by the responsible application of quantitative metrics.

CoARA’s mission is to facilitate systemic reform of research assessment within a specified timeframe, grounded in a common framework of principles and commitments. By fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mutual learning, it enables its members to implement and refine more inclusive and effective assessment approaches.

CoARA Action plan 2026-2030

As part of this commitment, KInIT´s first Action Plan was prepared and published on 24 March 2026. The plan covers the period 2026–2030 and outlines steps to align internal research assessment practices with CoARA principles and contribute to the broader transformation of research evaluation. Key priorities include promoting Open Science, recognising a wider range of research contributions, strengthening qualitative assessment, and updating evaluation tools, criteria, and processes. The document highlights areas where KInIT is already aligned with CoARA, followed by planned actions for this period.

As of 2026, KInIT is currently in the early implementation and preparation phase, focusing on mapping existing practices, conducting gap analyses, raising awareness, and establishing priorities and foundations for future development.
