KInIT’s NLP Summer School 2025

From September 3rd to 5th, we welcomed more than thirty curious minds for the second edition of our NLP Summer School. The event brought together students, young professionals and researchers eager to learn more about one of today’s most exciting areas of artificial intelligence.

Over three engaging days, participants explored how computers understand and generate human language. The programme combined lectures and hands-on workshops, gradually building from the basics of NLP to more advanced topics such as model evaluation and the broader role of language technologies in the AI ecosystem.

Our experts, together with lecturers from partner institutions, led the sessions and shared their knowledge and experience. For the first time, the event spanned three full days, which allowed for a richer and more interactive programme. The two poster sessions were especially popular, as participants had the chance to showcase their own projects and exchange ideas with our researchers.

“This year’s summer school was a very rewarding experience for lecturers as well,” said Michal Gregor, our researcher. “We had very receptive participants who were a joy to talk to. Some of them presented their own projects in the poster sessions – they’re working on amazing things! I was also glad that the expanded three-day format allowed us to present a more comprehensive picture of NLP and include more hands-on sessions.”

Marián Šimko, NLP team leader, highlighted the broader importance of the event: “Our NLP Summer School is one of the ways KInIT supports young talent – it’s part of our mission. NLP is a highly promising area, especially with the rapid advances in large language models and related technologies. We were thrilled to see such positive feedback from participants, and we’ll build on this success to make future editions even more engaging and relevant.”

This year’s programme also went beyond just technical content. Participants also reflected on ethical questions and philosophical aspects of AI, discussing topics such as responsible NLP and the concept of machine sentience. These discussions encouraged everyone to think more deeply about how technology affects people and society. Participants appreciated the friendly atmosphere, high-quality lectures, practical workshops and the opportunity to connect with like-minded people who share a passion for AI and language.

Our NLP Summer School has become one of KInIT’s key educational activities supporting young talent. We are proud of our growing success and are committed to continuing to bring together people who want to understand, shape and push the boundaries of natural language processing.
