“Trust Me, I Am an Ethicist”

Recently, we hosted the third session of our specialized symposium series focused on the ethics and philosophy of AI. For this discussion, we chose the topic “What is AI ethics and why is it important?” in response to the rapid proliferation of AI ethics in recent years. Although a wide array of ethical guidelines, principles, and governance of AI development and deployment have been formulated, they are often reduced to formal “check-boxing” that does not foster genuine ethical reflection.

Strengthening Interdisciplinary Dialogue

The primary goal of these meetups is to bring together research teams from various fields and academic backgrounds to deepen ethical reflection through cross-disciplinary insight. We aim to foster a space where diverse perspectives meet to form a sharp and constructive view of modern intelligent technologies. Led by our colleagues from the Ethics Department, Katarína Marcinčinová and Daniela Vacek, the discussion challenged participants to look at their research through a new lens and consider how the development and deployment of intelligent technologies can raise deeper ethical and societal concerns.

Hard Questions & Hybrid Conversations

The event followed a hybrid format, allowing colleagues to join both in person and online. Thanks to Slido, interaction was seamless, sparking a lively debate around some of the most pressing questions in AI ethics:

  • Are technologies neutral tools?
  • Defining the landscape: What is the actual difference between Ethics, Regulation, and Policy?
  • Ethics vs. Innovation: Does ethics slow down innovation?

What’s next?

This was the third session of our planned series. We look forward to the next meeting as we continue to explore the philosophical and ethical dimensions of AI.
