Senior Machine Learning Research Engineer

For our unique scientific institute, we are looking for a highly motivated new colleague. This position offers the chance to participate in interesting collaborations with the industry and to transfer knowledge within a dynamic research community. 

Job description

Your contribution will drive positive change through unique, machine learning-based solutions. You will collaborate with international research institutions and innovative companies. As a senior, you are expected to lead small to medium-scale projects, turn your innovative ideas into reality, and contribute to the team and institutional strategy.

Your work will be primarily (not exclusively) focused on one of the following application areas:

  • Natural language processing, focusing on language modelling and large language models, involving low-resource languages; addressing tasks such as text classification, sentiment analysis, text generation or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
  • Quality of information, focusing on combating false information and online malicious behaviour; investigation of the behaviour of LLMs and real-world recommender systems; interpretation and explanation of AI models.
  • Energy and environmental challenges, focusing on forecasting (nowcasting), anomaly detection, optimization of smart grids and flexibility solutions in a smart grid environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead small to medium-scale innovation projects. In collaboration with your project team, define a realistic scope based on discussions with industrial partners, set up expectations and propose, create and evaluate machine learning-based solutions.
  • Analyze requirements in industrial and research projects and transform them into a solution (analysis, proof of concept, prototype, product or research paper).
  • Contribute to the overall development of the institute with your technical expertise. Drive systematic expertise development in one or multiple focus areas.
  • Actively share the knowledge both internally and within the community.
  • Optionally: Set up and maintain cloud and on-premises infrastructure. We work with various cloud providers (the major focus being on AWS and Azure), our own cluster and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Personality requirements

Required skills

  • English – upper intermediate level (B2).
  • Good coverage of AI/ML topics, an overview of existing AI/ML tools and ability to choose the right one for a specific task.
  • Preferred technologies: Python or R, PyTorch, HuggingFace, Jupyter, TensorFlow.
  • Experience with leading people and the technological side of projects is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of data collection methodologies and data preprocessing techniques and tools to ensure data quality and integrity for effective model training is an advantage.

    • Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning
    • Data analysis, Data engineering
    • Computer science, Software engineering 
  • Effective communication skills to communicate with industrial partners and researchers, present research findings and project results and contribute to research publications and industrial reports.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze data, identify patterns, and derive actionable insights for research and industrial applications.
  • Continuous learning mindset, staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in cutting edge technologies, industry trends and AI.
  • We don’t expect you to meet all the requirements. We are not in search of a Superman, but rather a dedicated individual who is willing to improve both herself/himself and us.

Salary

The offered salary is from 3 000 € gross. The final offer strongly depends on the seniority and experience of a successful candidate.
